About
violent
affection

violent affection is a pop-folk singer-songwriter duo comprised of multidisciplinary artists: Brady Barrientos and Kris Cahatol. Based in Treaty 1 Territory, Winnipeg MB, violent affection has been performing, jamming, and goofing off at local venues since 2022.

As two theatre artists, they found that they shared a love of collaboration, infusing queerness in music, and not taking themselves too seriously– thus this dynamic duo was born.

Brady’s piano-driven jazz-pop background and Kris’ acoustic indie folk roots intertwine naturally to create violent affection’s signature playful and unique sound, reminiscent of late 60’s grooves. With inspirations from Carole King to Chappell Roan, violent affection is sure to sway your heart with fresh takes on pop hits of all decades, and moving original pieces. Don’t forget to tell your mom!

violent affection is made up of individuals who are settlers on Treaty One Territory, the ancestral lands of the Anishinabee, Cree, Anishininewuk, Dakota, and Dene people. It is also the heart of the Métis nation.

The Indigenous people of this land passed down their culture, knowledge, and love through storytelling. As artists, violent affection is privileged to have the freedom to sing, express, and celebrate on this land. That same freedom was stripped from our Indigenous people throughout the history of this country. We commit ourselves, and invite everyone reading this to commit themselves to reconciliation, collaboration, and healing.
